Northfleet to Gravesend: Proposed walking, wheeling and cycling improvements

Update: 12 March 2024

The proposals and consultation results were presented at the Gravesham Joint Transport Board (JTB) on 29 November 2023 for recommendations on how best to proceed with the scheme.

The Board voted in favour of taking forward parts of the scheme that were supported, such as the pathway improvements for pedestrians and the one-way system on Gordon Road.

The latest proposals now show only pedestrian improvements to the footway on London Road between Rural Vale and St Marks Avenue and a Tiger crossing on The Hill adjacent to Granby Street. A Tiger crossing, officially called a parallel crossing, combine a pedestrian zebra crossing with a crossing for cyclists.

This proposal has been submitted to Department for Transport for approval. As soon as we have heard back from them with their decision, we will provide an update at the next JTB and on this page.

Update: 29 November 2023

Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in this consultation.

The consultation report is now available in the Documents section. The report was presented at the Gravesham Joint Transport Board (JTB) on the 29 November 2023 to seek a decision on if the scheme is to proceed or not.

Following previous consultations undertaken in 2020 and 2021, Kent County Council (KCC) has developed the design further, taking into consideration the comments received during the previous consultations.

We want to create a safer and direct route for cycling from Northfleet to Gravesend. The proposed scheme runs along the south side of the B2175 London Road in Northfleet, carrying on through Overcliffe to the junction with St James‘s Avenue and ending at the junction with Darnley Road, Gravesend.

Following feedback from the previous consultation we have:

  • removed the cycle route from the northern side of B2175 starting from The Hill continuing through the A226 Overcliffe
  • reduced the number of parking spaces being removed

The Consultation Document provides more details on the full scheme.

Your views matter

We want to continue to understand and incorporate the views of the local community, stakeholders and the travelling public into the design of this scheme. You can provide feedback by completing the questionnaire.

We are also holding three drop-in events where you can talk to a member of the team if you have any design questions and view A1 size scheme plans.

What happens after the consultation?

Following the consultation, a report will be compiled summarising the analysis of the responses. This report will be made available from this webpage. The feedback will be used to help finalise the scheme design and reported to the Gravesham Joint Transportation Board (JTB) in November.

If the decision is taken to proceed with the scheme, then before any construction takes place Start of Works notices would be delivered to local residents and boards would be placed on site. These would advise you of when the works would start and of any changes to the highway that may arise during construction.
