Cheriton to Folkestone Central Station: Proposed walking, wheeling and cycling improvements

Update - September 2023

Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in this consultation.

The consultation report is now available in the Documents section. The report was presented at the Folkestone & Hythe Joint Transport Board (JTB) on the 11 September 2023. Our recommendation was to progress the scheme including the potential of a 20mph speed limit to detailed design and construction.

The JTB have agreed with our recommendation, and the scheme will now enter the detailed design stage which will involve Active Travel England as scheme funder. Construction is likely to start in Spring 2024 and we will advertise any Traffic Regulation Order’s (TRO's) needed for the scheme. A Start of Works Notice will also be published to inform residents, businesses and members of the public.

Following on from the consultation undertaken in 2021, Kent County Council (KCC) has developed the design further, taking into consideration the comments received during the previous consultation.

We want to create a safer and direct route for cycling from Cheriton to Folkestone. The proposed scheme runs along the B2064 Cheriton Road starting near B2063 Risborough Lane and ending at Radnor Park.

We now plan to include a potential 20mph zone between Somerset Road and Coombe Road, a new cycle path between Cherry Garden Avenue and Cornwallis Avenue and make safety improvements to the Cherry Garden Avenue and Cheriton Road traffic signal junction.

The Consultation Document provides more details on the full scheme.

Your views matter

We want to continue to understand and incorporate the views of the local community, stakeholders and the travelling public into the design of this scheme. You can provide feedback by completing the questionnaire.

We are also holding two drop-in events where you can talk to a member of the team if you have any design questions and view A1 size scheme plans.

What happens after the consultation?

Following the consultation, a report will be compiled summarising the analysis of the responses. This report will be made available from this webpage. The feedback will be used to help finalise the scheme design and reported to the Folkestone Joint Transportation Board (JTB) in September.

If the decision is taken to proceed with the scheme, then any proposed alterations to the Traffic Regulation Orders currently in place will be advertised through a notice in the local newspaper and on this page.
