Folkestone: Central Station to Cheriton

Update 24 March 2022

Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in this consultation.

The consultation report was discussed by the Members of the Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee on the 17 March 2022. Following the consultation we are reviewing the scheme design, which includes:

  • provision of a scheme only to the east of Coombe Road, with a minimal impact on parking and the business activity in the High Street
  • identification of additional pedestrian crossings, public realm and speed management along the route
  • improvements along Cheriton High Street to encourage and enhance the experience for pedestrians and visitors (with no detriment to parking)
  • exploring some of the improvements suggested by businesses.

We will be forming a steering group to establish local governance for this scheme, which will report to the Folkestone and Hythe Joint Transportation Board. Any updated designs will be made available on this webpage.

We want to create a safer and direct route which connects Folkestone Central Station to Cheriton.

The route mainly travels along Cheriton Road, including a small section of Shorncliffe Road and Cheriton High Street. This would mean that people can travel from home to destination by bike more easily, with separated cycle tracks proposed for most of the route.

Improving these areas for cycling also creates an opportunity to make Cheriton High Street and local streets better places for walking and improve their attractiveness.

The proposals include new and improved crossing points and changes to junctions to improve safety and give more priority to people walking and cycling.

The scheme also includes new areas of greenery to maximise biodiversity, provide shade and shelter and make the area more attractive. These would be combined with placemaking features, which are small measures to enhance the look and feel of the area and create spaces for socialising and relaxing.

The Consultation Brochure provides more detail.

Have your say!

Feedback from our first consultation has been used to help shape the proposals being presented in this consultation.

We want to continue to understand and incorporate the views of local communities, as this feedback is essential in helping to shape how the scheme is progressed.

Please complete the consultation questionnaire to tell us your views.
