A decision has now been made to progress with the installation of the ANPR cameras. We expect this to take place in Spring 2024. This would be followed by the installation of the ANPR cameras with enforcement starting soon after.
Kent County Council (KCC) are using new powers, approved by parliament in July 2022, to improve safety and tackle congestion by enforcing moving traffic contraventions.
We are proposing to install ANPR cameras at a new bus gate between Chapelfield Way and Howard Drive. Our aim is by adding the cameras in at the beginning of the delivery of the new bus service this will prevent misuse and will ensure compliance.
Usually, we must ensure that reasonable improvements to the highway or traffic signing have been made prior to ANPR cameras being installed to avoid contraventions. However, we know similar bus gates in residential areas have been misused by drivers in unauthorised vehicles. This has led to bus operators withdrawing their services.
The aim of the enforcement is to achieve an increase public transport reliability and improve air quality.
