William Mundy Way, Dartford - Enforcing moving traffic offences

Update: December 2024

Thank you to everyone who took part in this consultation. The Consultation Report is now available in the Documents section on this page.

A decision has now been made to progress with the installation of the ANPR cameras. The next step will be to advertise new Traffic Regulation Orders which are legal documents to enable KCC to manage traffic at these sites. We expect this to be sealed in the next few weeks. This would be followed by the installation of the ANPR cameras with enforcement starting soon after.

Kent County Council (KCC) are using new powers, approved by parliament in July 2022, to improve safety and tackle congestion by enforcing moving traffic contraventions.

We are proposing to install moving traffic enforcement cameras at the existing bus gate on William Mundy Way in Dartford. This bus gate has been open as part of the Fastrack rapid bus service for several years. An increasing number of private vehicles are using this route as a shortcut. This is illegal, dangerous and affects the punctuality of the buses which in turn makes the bus service less attractive to passengers.

We must ensure that reasonable improvements to the highway or traffic signing have been made prior to ANPR cameras being installed to avoid contraventions. This site meets these requirements, as during the regeneration of this area, we removed any obsolete signs and installed a blue surfacing to make the bus gate more obvious. Despite this, unauthorised vehicles are still using this route.

The aim of the enforcement is to increase public transport reliability.
