Tunbridge Wells town centre bus gates: Enforcing moving traffic offences

Kent County Council (KCC) are using new powers, approved by parliament in July 2022, to improve safety and tackle congestion by enforcing moving traffic contraventions.

In March 2023, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) started camera enforcement under Section 87 of the Traffic Management Act 2004. Prior to this enforcement KCC and TWBC worked together to make improvements to the site which comprised of clearer signage and changes to the road surfaces at the entry points of the scheme. TWBC’s records from the past year show that unauthorised vehicles are still regularly going through the bus gate on Mount Pleasant Road, and therefore the continuation of moving traffic enforcement is required. Now that KCC has powers under Part 6 of the Act, we are able to carry out this enforcement instead of TWBC.

As the Highway Authority, we are proposing to take on the enforcement of these bus gates. This would allow even more effective and efficient enforcement through better cameras within the area.

The aim of the enforcement is to increase public transport reliability and help preserve the safety of pedestrians, residents, businesses and visitors.
