A290 St Dunstan’s Street and Station Road West, Canterbury - Highway Improvement Scheme
We are carrying out this consultation to hear your views on proposed highway improvements for St Dunstan’s Street (A290) and Station Road West in Canterbury to improve road safety.
We are proposing to:
On Station Road West – relocate the existing zebra crossing from near Pavilion Court to a new position closer to the junction with St Dunstan’s Street. Moving the crossing closer to the junction would provide a safe and convenient place to cross the road.
On St Dunstan’s Street – remove the buff-coloured surfacing at the junction to make the white mini-roundabout more visible, improving awareness and road safety. The road markings at the junction would be refreshed.
Moving the zebra crossing would mean re-positioning the double yellow lines from outside Kukki and Cake Box to outside Victoria Court and Mathew Court. This requires an amendment to the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
The TRO is being made for the following reasons:
for avoiding danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising
for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which the road runs
for facilitating the passage on the road or any other road of any class of traffic (including pedestrians).
The Public Notice on the repositioning of the Zebra Crossing is also available to view in the 'Documents' section.
Have your say!
You can share your views on the proposed highway safety improvement scheme and respond to the TRO by completing the online questionnaire, which is available from this webpage.
If you cannot complete the online questionnaire, a Word version is available to download from this webpage, which you can complete and return either by email or post.
If you have questions about the proposals or need any support to take part in the consultation, you can contact us via the contact details under the 'Who's listening' section on this webpage. When contacting us, please quote the reference: ‘St Dunstan’s Street / Station Road West, Canterbury CRM’.
Next steps
After the consultation closes, we will review responses and publish a consultation report on this webpage.
The consultation feedback is expected to be presented to the Canterbury Joint Transportation Board (JTB). A final decision on how to proceed will be taken by the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.
If the scheme goes ahead, we will advertise the ‘Made Order’ for the TRO. These will be publicised via notices on our website and on Station Road West and in a local newspaper.

We have provided this questionnaire so you can share your views on the proposed highway improvements to St Dunstan’s Street (A290) and Station Road West. Your feedback will help us decide how to proceed with the scheme.
We recommend you read the Consultation Document before responding to this questionnaire.
The questionnaire is in four parts:
Part one - Before you tell us your views on the proposals, we would like to ask you a couple of questions about you. This information will help us to understand your views in more depth.
Part two – In this section you can tell us your views on the proposed scheme as a whole.
Part three – Here you will be asked if you support or object to the waiting restriction amendments (re-positioning of the double yellow lines) and asked to give your reason(s).
Part four – Optional equality monitoring questions to help to understand how people with different protected characteristics could be affected by our proposals.
You can answer all or as many of the questions as you like. If you would rather not provide feedback on a section or question, just move on to the next one. Please remember to click through to the end of the questionnaire and submit your response.
Please do not include any personal information that could identify you or anyone else in any of your answers.
In line with other local authorities and government departments, we ask people to register to take part in some activities on Let’s Talk Kent. We do this to give people the opportunity to choose to be kept informed and to protect the integrity of our consultations from individuals and groups who may attempt to unduly influence the outcomes of the consultation. It also means that when you submit your response you will receive a copy by email for your own records.
As with all our consultations a Word version of the questionnaire is available from the consultation webpage for people who would prefer not to complete the online version.
