School Streets - Snodland C of E Primary School

The School Streets trial we introduced has now been in place for over four weeks. This initiative aims to create a safer, healthier, and happier environment for everyone.

What is the School Streets Trial?

The trial involves temporarily restricting motor vehicle access near the main entrance of Snodland C of E Primary School during drop-off and pick-up times.

The trial will run from 27 April to 26 October 2026, with restrictions in place between 8.00am to 9.00am, and 2.30pm - 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, during school term time only.

Residents accessing their homes, Pilgrims View Care Home staff and emergency services will still be able to travel in and out of the trial area during the restricted times.

You can apply for an exemption permit which will allow you to enter and park within the School Streets area during the restricted times.

A six-month consultation period has now started. Whilst the trial is in place, everyone will be encouraged to provide feedback about their experiences of the School Streets.

Throughout the trial, we will work closely with Snodland C of E Primary School to understand its impact – not just within the School Streets zone, but also in surrounding roads – by monitoring safety outside the school entrance, air quality, and traffic flow.

Your feedback will play a crucial role in evaluating its success. Following the consultation and trial period a decision will be made about the future of the School Streets.

Why are we doing this?

The main aims of the trial are to:

  • improve road safety for children and families
  • reduce traffic congestion and pollution
  • encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling (active travel) to school
  • create a calmer and more pleasant environment outside the school.

Which roads will become the School Streets zone?

Following your feedback to our ‘Three quick questions’ survey we have now amended the area the School Streets zone will cover. A strong theme in the responses was a suggestion to extend the zone to include the junction at Pridmore Road (leading to Roman Road and Bingley Close). This area is a dead-end section with footpath links from both Birling Road and Constitution Hill, and it appears that many families use or cross this junction on their way to and from school.

The suggestion was discussed with the school, who confirmed they would be happy for the Pridmore Road junction to be included within the trial area. This would simply involve moving the Roberts Road barrier point forward by a short distance, which the school believes is manageable for their team.

We also agree that including Pridmore Road will create a safer environment for families. Many children and parents cross this junction, and if it remained outside the zone, there is a risk that some drivers may use it as a turning point due to its proximity to the restricted area. We have therefore agreed to extend the School Street zone to include the Pridmore Road junction.

The trial will now run along Roberts Road, starting just before the junction with Godden Road on Roberts Road. It will run past the school's main entrance and Pilgrims View Care Home until the end of the road. The trial will also include the junctions of Godden Road and Pridmore Road (leading to Roman Road and Bingley Close).

Experimental Traffic Regulation Order

We are consulting on an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) which introduces a school street trial on Roberts Road, Bingley Close, Pridmore Road, Roman Road and Godden Road.

This order has been made for the following reasons:

  • to avoid the danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising.
  • for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which the road runs.
  • for facilitating the passage on the road or any other road of any class of traffic (including pedestrians).

The Order will come into effect on the 27 April 2026 on an experimental basis for a period of six months. The scheme will be reviewed so that the Council can make the decision to make the Order permanent, amend or abandon it.

Full details, including the scheme plan, can be found in the Public Notice and Statement for Reason document, which can be found in the 'Documents' section.

Any person wishing to object to or support the Order before it is made permanent can do so via our response form.

Post-launch survey

Separately from the ETRO consultation, we’d like to ask you some questions about journeys and safety on the roads between the school, home or businesses in the trial area, the aims of the trial, how you feel about it and its impact. This information will be very useful in helping us to understand the impact of the trial so far.

The post-launch survey can be completed below. There are two versions:

The ETRO consultation and post-launch surveys closes at midnight on Monday 26 October 2026.

If you have any questions about the School Streets trial, or need a paper copy of the survey, please get in touch using the contact details in the 'Who's listening' section, providing the reference 'School Streets - Snodland C of E Primary School'.
