On Friday 1 July, Chair, Mrs Lesley Game alongside Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, Rosemary Dymond DL, Leader, Roger Gough, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Shellina Prendergast, and Founder of Kitchen Social Margate, Lucy Gray, undertook one if their toughest assignments in recent times. They were tasked with choosing the winners of the Platinum Jubilee cake competition.
We received 50 entries from students across Kent, with the hopes of a place in the final. Those entries were whittled down to 15 from 11 schools. They were asked to bake their creations and deliver them to County Hall in Maidstone for the tasting.
And the winners are....
KS2: Olivia from The Discovery School, Kings Hill with her patriotic cupcakes, some of which resembled party tents.
KS3: Milly from Meopham School for her riot of sponge, strawberries, cream and chocolate shards.
KS4: Becky from Simon Langton Grammar School for Girls in Canterburywho brought a three-storey marbled red, white and blue spectacular fit to mark the 70-year reign.
Chair, Mrs Lesley Game, said “I am delighted to have been able to run this baking competition for students across Kent in the Jubilee year. We had a great response, and it was difficult to pick the finalists from all the amazing entries. It has been fantastic to see the finished cakes here at County Hall and the standard of baking has been very high indeed. It has made our jobs as judges very difficult.
“I’d like to offer my heartiest congratulations to the winners and the runners up, and to all the finalists and everyone who submitted an entry to the competition. You should all be very proud of your cakes and designs.”
