King Street, Maidstone – Enforcing Moving Traffic Offences

A decision has now been made to progress with the installation of the ANPR cameras. We will now carry out any necessary work to install ANPR cameras. Permanent traffic enforcement camera warning signs will be installed to inform drivers of enforcement in the area, and temporary signs will be put onsite to notify drivers of the start date prior to the cameras being switched on. The cameras are likely to be installed during Autumn 2026.

Kent County Council (KCC) is using powers, approved by parliament in July 2022, to improve safety and tackle congestion by enforcing moving traffic contraventions.

We are proposing to install ANPR enforcement cameras on King Street in Maidstone. These would be at the eastern end of the King Street pedestrian and cycle zone with the junction of Wyke Manor Road.

The King Street pedestrian and cycle zone includes several bus stops and a taxi rank. Only buses and hackney carriage taxis are allowed to enter the pedestrian and cycle zone beyond the traffic lights leading to the High Street. However, unauthorised vehicles are increasingly using the route as a shortcut.

There have been several problems reported on this section of road. These include cars parking in bus stops, vehicles blocking both sides of the road, and illegal vehicles causing traffic jams near the Queen’s Monument. These have impacted road safety in this area.

The aim of the enforcement is to achieve the following objectives:

  • improve road safety
  • increase public transport reliability
