The effect of this proposed Order would be to introduce a 20mph speed limit on the following lengths of roads in central Folkestone, Folkestone and Hythe:-

  • Albion Mews Road, Alexandra Gardens, Bouverie Place, Bouverie Square, Cheriton Gardens, Cheriton Road (2034), Church Street, Foresters Way, Gloucester Place, Guildhall Street, Middleburg Square, Millfield, Oxford Terrace, Shellons Street, and St Eanswythe Way – For their entire length.
  • Rendezvous Street – from its junction with Guildhall Street to its junction with The Old High Street
  • Sandgate Road – from its junction with Bouverie Place to its junction with Church Street
  • Shorncliffe Road – from its junction with Cheriton Road (A2034) for a distance of 65 metres in a westerly direction.

This order is proposed for the following reasons:

From 1 April 2013 Kent County Council became responsible for a number of Public Health functions. One of those was the health improvement for the population of Kent. In recent years the demand for the implementation of 20mph schemes had been increasing in response to both local and national campaigns, therefore Kent County Council are intending to implement 20mph Public Health Schemes in the following location, in Folkestone.

KCC are delivering the Folkestone A Brighter Future project including highway and public realm works on behalf of Folkestone and Hythe District Council. The scheme is designed to improve the pedestrian and cycle facilities from Folkestone Central Station into the Town Centre. As part of these works KCC propose to reduce traffic speeds in the project area and some surrounding streets to improve pedestrian safety and experience and to support Active Travel. This TRO is therefore being proposed as part of the projects delivery.

  • avoid the danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising
  • for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which the road runs.

The scheme will be reviewed so that the Council can make the decision to make the Order permanent, amend or abandon it.

Full details, including the scheme plan, can be found in the Public Notice and Statement of Reason document.
