School Streets - Brunswick House Primary School

We are excited to inform you about an upcoming School Streets trial which we will be introducing by Brunswick House Primary School in Maidstone to create a safer, healthier, and more pleasant environment for everyone.

What is the School Streets Trial?

The trial involves temporarily restricting motor vehicle access outside the main entrance to Brunswick House Primary School during school drop-off and pick-up times. People will still be able to access the gym at these times, and the emergency services will be exempt.

The trial will run from 19 May to 17 November 2025, with restrictions in place between 8.15am - 9.00am, and 3.00pm - 3.45pm, Monday to Friday, during school term time only.

At the time the trial launches, a six month consultation period will also start. Whilst the trial is in place, everyone will be encouraged to provide feedback about their experiences of the School Streets.

Throughout the trial, we will work closely with Brunswick House Primary School to understand its impact, monitoring safety, air quality, and traffic flow outside the school entrance and on Buckland Road.

Your feedback will play a crucial role in evaluating its success. Following the consultation and trial period a decision will be made about the future of the School Streets.

Why are we doing this?

The main aims of the trial is to:

  • improve road safety for children and families
  • reduce traffic congestion and pollution
  • encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling (active travel) to school
  • create a calmer and more pleasant environment outside the school.

Which streets are affected?

The following street will be part of the trial:

  • Leafy Lane (immediately after the junction for the car park).

How can you get involved now?

We value feedback on the trial and encourage you to participate in the consultation when the trial launches. Parents, carers, local residents and businesses will receive further communication from the school and KCC closer to the launch date. This will include details about how you can respond to the consultation.

Before we start the School Streets trial we’d like to ask you some questions about the school run, safety on the roads and the aims of the trial. This information will be very useful in helping us to understand the impact of the trial.

The pre-launch survey can be completed below. There are two versions:

  • Parent and carer survey (this includes grandparents, childminders, babysitters and anyone else taking children to and from school)
  • Resident and business survey (this includes people who work or visit a business that is located at the end of Leafy Lane, in the area that will become the School Streets zone or a secondary school on Buckland Road).

If you cannot complete the online surveys, Word versions are available to download from the Documents section on this webpage, which you can complete and return either by email or to the school office.

The pre-launch surveys close at midnight on Sunday 18 May 2025.

If you have any questions about the School Streets trial, or need a paper copy of the survey, please get in touch using the contact details in the Who's listening section and providing the reference 'School Streets Brunswick House, Maidstone'.
