Redhouse Lane and Chartham Downs Road junction, Chartham, Canterbury - Highway Improvement Scheme

We are carrying out this consultation to hear your views on proposed highway improvements at Redhouse Lane, which aim to improve road safety at its junction with Chartham Downs Road in Chartham.

We are currently considering two options:

  • Option 1: Closing Redhouse Lane to all motor vehicles between The Red House and the junction with Chartham Downs Road. This option would remove access to all through‑traffic for motor vehicles while maintaining access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Access to the property on Redhouse Lane would be from the south via Stone Street / Street End (B2068).

  • Option 2: Making Redhouse Lane one-way southbound, from Chartham Downs Road to its junction with Stone Street and Street End. Redhouse Lane would remain open to vehicles travelling in one direction only. This would include cyclists, as the road is not wide enough to safely accommodate two-way cycling. Access to the property on Redhouse Lane would only be possible from one direction, with vehicles required to exit in the same direction.

The consultation feedback is expected to be presented to the Canterbury Joint Transportation Board (JTB). A final decision on how to proceed will be taken by the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.

If a decision is made to progress with one of the options, a statutory Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation will be required. TROs are legal documents that allow traffic restrictions to be enforced. Each TRO is formally advertised and consulted on. Details of any TRO consultations will be shared on this webpage, in a local newspaper, and on notices placed on affected street(s).
