When will I start seeing charge points on Kent streets?
We hope to begin installing the charge points in late 2025/early 2026. Please check back for further updates to the programme.
What type of charge points will they be?
Until we appoint a charge point operator to work with we are not able to confirm exact specifications. However, the network will consist mainly of 7kw ‘bollard’ style charge points.
How long will it take to charge my car?
Battery size, existing level of charge and charger speed will all impact the time. However, with a 7kw charge point you will get 20-40 miles for every hour the car is on charge. To charge from 20%-80% could take between 8 and 12 hours.
Who can use the charge points?
The charge points will be primarily for local residents and where possible they will be installed in areas with residential permit parking zone restrictions. Only EVs that are plugged in may park in the charge point bays.
Will you consult with local residents?
In most cases electric vehicle only bays will be enforced by a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). Each TRO is advertised and consulted on. Anyone can object to, or support, any of the proposed traffic orders. More information can be found on the KCC Traffic Regulation Order webpage.
Where will the charge points be located?
We are working with District, Borough, Town and Parish Councils to find suitable locations for charge points. We would also like to hear from you if you would like to nominate your street. You can do this via the interactive map.
I made a suggestion for my street to get a charge point. Why haven’t you installed one?
Not every street that is suggested will be suitable to receive a charge point. This could be for various reasons, including:
We will investigate every suggestion made, but we can't promise that every site suggested will receive a charge point.
How will the charge points be funded?
We have been awarded £12,081,000 by the Government as part of the Office of Zero Emissions Vehicles (OZEV) Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. Alongside this, private sector funding will be invested by our charge point operator partner.
Who will be responsible for the charge points?
Our charge point operator partner will be responsible for the ownership, operation and maintenance and repair of the network of charge points.
How accessible will the charge points be?
We are working with to people like Motability and the Energy Saving Trust to understand the needs of all drivers. Our aim is that parking bays and chargers are PAS 1899 compliant wherever possible. PAS 1899 covers accessible electric vehicle charge points for those with diverse accessibility needs. More information can be found on the Energy Saving Trusts website.
Can I install a cross-pavement charge point outside my house?
We do not currently permit any type of cross-pavement solution for EV charging; however, we recognise the need for this and are working to find a suitable solution from the range of options emerging on the market, and hope that a licensable option will be agreed and available soon. There is more information available on KCC's website.
