Gravesham: Gravesend to Northfleet

Update 24 March 2022

Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in this consultation.

The consultation report was discussed by the Members of the Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee on the 17 March 2022. Following the consultation we are no longer planning to deliver a cycleway going in two directions on one side of London Road and Overcliffe and are reviewing the following elements of the scheme:

West section:

  • explore options to reduce speed on London Road, including some potential traffic calming features
  • explore options for improved pedestrian facilities, including crossings and widened footways
  • review options for additional cycling facilities including Advanced Stop Lines for cyclists, side road connections and cycle parking
  • investigate options to improve the existing advisory cycle lane on London Road with semi-permanent measures.

Centre section / Rosherville:

  • review of public realm opportunities at Rosherville shops, including pedestrian areas and side road junctions
  • explore options for improved cycle facilities through the commercial area without a negative impact on parking.

East section:

  • explore options for improved pedestrian and cycling measures to the east section of London Road, including Thames Way junction
  • re-evaluate the opportunities for improving pedestrian and cycling measures on the Overcliffe Road route to the town centre
  • review of St James Road through to the station.

We will be forming a steering group to establish local governance for this scheme, which will report to the Gravesham Joint Transportation Board. Any updated designs will be made available on this webpage.

We want to create a new cycle route along London Road and Overcliffe, which connects Gravesend and Northfleet. These proposals would provide a safer and more pleasant environment for all street users by making it easier to cross busy roads and offering separated space for people to cycle.

The route will help cyclists access Gravesend Railway Station and the Town Centre, as well as residential areas and schools, with separated cycle tracks proposed for most of the scheme. The new route also connects with National Cycle Route 1, which links through to the coastal roads in the north and Springhead to the south.

The scheme includes new areas of greenery to maximise biodiversity, provide shade and shelter and make the area more attractive. These would be combined with placemaking features, which are small measures to enhance the look and feel of the area and create spaces for socialising and relaxing.

The Consultation Brochure provides more detail.

Have your say!

Feedback from our first consultation has been used to help shape the proposals being presented in this consultation.

We want to continue to understand and incorporate the views of local communities, as this feedback is essential in helping to shape how the scheme is progressed.
