Thank you to everyone who participated in this consultation.
Due to the low level of support for the proposed scheme, KCC has decided not to proceed with it any further. Feedback highlighted that illegal parking is a significant issue in the area. We will pass this on to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, who are responsible for the enforcement of existing parking restrictions, requesting additional parking enforcement on Commercial Road.
The Consultation Report, which summarises the analysis and findings from the consultation is available to download from the 'Consultation documents' section.
We are consulting on three options to help improve pedestrian and cycling access to the main shopping area of Paddock Wood on Commercial Road.
We want to gather views from the local community on the options being preented to help us identify the most appropriate scheme for the area.
In Summer 2020, as part of the government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund, we installed access restrictions on Commercial Road to help promote walking and cycling. The aim of the scheme was to improve the existing footway widths and provide more space for pedestrians on Commercial Road. It was felt that this would also help the local economy by providing better access for shopping and socialising in the local commercial area rather than travelling to larger towns. It was also intended to provide improved cycling access to Commercial Road and the local area, such as access to the railway station.
The scheme was removed shortly after installation in response to local feedback and because of the traffic disruption that occurred during the planned closure of Church Road for utility works, an alternative access route to Paddock Wood.
The aim of this consultation is to provide options for Commercial Road that address the concerns raised previously but would still provide a more pleasant environment for walking and cycling and therefore encourage the use of these travel methods. Your feedback, through this consultation, is vital in helping us to shape and progress the scheme.
