A226 London Road, Stone, Dartford – Active Travel Scheme

Welcome to our consultation on proposed improvements to the A226 London Road in Stone, between the Cotton Lane junction and the St Clements Way Roundabout.

Kent County Council is working with Dartford Borough Council and Stone Town Council on plans to make this 1.4-mile route safer and more accessible for everyone.

The scheme aims to make it easier to walk, wheel and cycle, while keeping traffic moving.

What we are proposing

The proposals include:

  • segregated (separated) cycle lanes on both sides of London Road
  • new continuous footways across side roads
  • new and improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
  • floating bus stops with cycle bypass lanes
  • changes to some signal-controlled junctions
  • a consistent 30mph speed limit along the route
  • new trees, planting and rain gardens
  • six new benches and 20 new cycle stands
  • clearly marked parking bays and new waiting restrictions to help address inappropriate lorry and footway parking
  • a short new bus lane between Stone Lodge Road and Cotton Lane.

The scheme would maintain access to homes and businesses. Eleven existing parking spaces would be removed, while five new spaces would be created.

The proposals do not include a Low Traffic Neighbourhood or a 20mph speed limit, and they would not reduce the amount of highway space available. The aim is to make better use of the existing road layout for everyone who uses it.

For more information on the proposals and how they could affect different parts of the route, please read the full Consultation Document and view the scheme plans, which are available from the 'Documents' section on this webpage.Read the Consultation Document

You can also read the frequently asked questions (FAQs) on this webpage, which will be updated throughout the consultation period as required.

  • We want to hear what young people think about plans to improve London Road (A226) in Stone, between Cotton Lane and St Clements Way Roundabout. The plans aim to make the route safer and easier for people to walk, use a wheelchair or mobility aid, and cycle, while keeping access for buses, cars, homes and businesses.

The plans are intended to make journeys safer, help people travel without a car, improve air quality and create a greener, more pleasant street.

How could the plans affect young people?

The improvements could make journeys to school, shops, bus stops and other local places easier and nicer. However, some people may be concerned about shared areas, crossing cycle lanes at floating bus stops, changes to parking or disruption while construction takes place.
